I just didn't have the heart to tell them....

<![CDATA[Nick's College Football Diary]]> Wed, 18 Oct 2006 18:18:56 GMT I went to my first training session at college today and managed to score a goal (off my arse, admittedly).

My fitness is shocking at the moment so hopefully in a few weeks I'll improve and get that extra yard or two of pace back.

Happy with myng performance, made some good runs but I just wasnt getting the pass. Really frustrating but, as my Dad correctly pointed out, for every 20 runs you make, you'll only get one pass and when you get that pass you've gotta score.

I'll be checking the noticeboard to see if I get a place in the squad for the away match at Priory but I don't hold out much hope because I'm not really fit yet and there were a few strikers there today.

I'm trying out for the D team by the way. It's a big college alright!! ]]>

Me personally, would try and go for power into the top left hand corner - but think, the opposition goalkeeper would easily read my idea. ]]>

37 Serbian soccer fans arrested for racism Tue, 17 Oct 2006 14:19:38 GMT BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) - Police arrested 37 Serbian soccer fans because of racist behavior during a game.

Group, wearing white hoods, chanted Nazi slogans at a black player during Saturday's first division match between Borac and Vozdovac in Cacak, police said Sunday. Vozdovac won 1-0.

The match was interrupted for 10 minutes because of the chants, Nazi salutes and a banner which read that Borac's Zimbabwean player Mike Tamvanyeri "must leave because you are not welcome."

Twenty-nine Borac fans were released Sunday after spending a night in jail, while eight were kept in detention facing charges of "spreading racial hatred at a sports venue," police said.

Borac coach Radovan Curcic said he was shocked by the fans' behavior, and added that Tamvanyeri was "feeling bad because of all this."

Racist outburst at sports competitions are common in Serbia. ]]>

Usually, you'd associate quality with quality.

Ronaldinho, Lampard, Henry, Ballack..... Tim Cahill?

There are far too many sub-standard player on the list this time around. What the hoo-ha is going on? ]]>

Sponsorship and that Sun, 15 Oct 2006 23:21:35 GMT I'm not quite sure what I aim to achieve by starting this thread, but I think it's an interesting thing to mention nonetheless. I'm pretty sure it hasn't been posted before (I did a search...)

Right, a few months ago Freddie Kanoute, now at Sevilla and a practicing Muslim (oooh! not that word again!) refused to wear his team's shirt that contained their new sponsor's name. Sevilla's new sponsor was the gambling firm and annoying purveyors of pop-ups, 888.com. Kanoute had this to say:

"According to the Koran, drinking alcohol, gambling, worshipping idols and lotteries are the Devil's tools. That is why I have told the club that I must have a pure shirt. I believe they understand my position and why I have to do this. They have agreed to what I have asked and will let me wear a shirt without this logo."

So, as you may have

No Thread specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator). It was a little ironic really, as his stance against the gambling firm actually gave them far more publicity than they could have hoped for.

However, about a month ago, apparently the gambling firm gave some money to charity in exchange for Kanoute wearing the sponsored shirt.

Regardless, I was just interested in how many teams out there are sponsored by companies that go against these principles and if there are any other players out there who have refused to wear the sponsor's name on their shirts. I just thought it could make for interesting scenarios in the future. i.e Teams not buying players because of their sponsor, a team gets interested in a player but the player won't join and the sponsors won't give in and yet there's still a few years left on the deal, Teams may run into advantages due to their sponsors etc.

Then again, I hear sponsorship by some if not all of those things are banned in some countries anyway.... ]]> General Football Darren http://footiethreads.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47223 ....and they tailed off into nothingness.
